Cristiano Ronaldo may have been announced as the world’s best player for 2013 when he won the most recent Ballon d’Or, but he is only the fourth best player ever, according to a poll on MSN Sport.
The Real Madrid superstar has averaged more than a goal a game since making his £80 million world record transfer to Real Madrid in 2009, but managed to secure only 8% of the 50,000 votes when put against the greatest players ever to have stepped on to the field.

The Portuguese captain pipped rival Lionel Messi in Zurich last week, but the Argentinian, four-time winner of the Ballon d’Or, managed to come third in this all-time great list with 11% of the votes cast.

It was not a huge surprise to see Brazilian legend Pele top the poll with a huge 37%, but, rather more shocking was to see Diego Maradona down in sixth place with a measly 6%.
Maradona almost single-handedly won Argentina the 1986 World Cup with exhilarating displays throughout the tournament, including knocking England out in the quarter-finals with that goal and THAT goal!
In second place was Manchester United hero George Best with 16%, despite never playing in a World Cup.

The charismatic forward never got to test himself on the very biggest stage of all but did manage to score in the 4-1 European Cup final win over Benfica in 1968.
France’s classy midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who so famously ended his career by getting sent off in the 2002 World Cup final, received 6%, while his compatriot Michel Platini came last, picking up just 138 votes.

Brazilian Ronaldo, Eusebio, Ferenc Puskas, Johan Cruyff and Franz Beckenbauer made up the rest of the list, with none getting more than 2% of the total vote.
When the same poll was carried out on MSN France there were some difference of opinion with the UK voting.

Zidane (23%) came second behind Pele (32%) and George Best barely raised an eyebrow getting just 23 of the 10,000 votes.
