Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman found dead

Oscar-winning actor Philip Seymour Hoffman has died from an "apparent drug overdose" in his New York City apartment, an NYPD spokesman said.
The 46-year-old was found dead in his bathroom in the city's Greenwich Village area at 11.30am local time.
Awarded a best actor actor Oscar for his role in the 2005 film Capote, Seymour Hoffman checked into rehab in May for heroin use .
"He was found dead in his bathroom of an apparent drug overdose," an NYPD spokesman said.
Police were called by a friend of the actor, the spokesman said.

Hoffman's family released the following statement: "We are devastated by the loss of our beloved Phil and appreciate the outpouring of love and support we have received from everyone.
"This is a tragic and sudden loss and we ask that you respect our privacy during this time of grieving. Please keep Phil in your thoughts and prayers."
Speaking at the London Critics' Circle Film Awards in central London, John Hurt - who starred with Seymour Hoffman in 2003 film Owning Mahowny - said: "It's a devastating loss. His contribution was massive."

Celebrities have also paid tribute to the actor on Twitter.
Comedian Ricky Gervais wrote: " Such shocking & sad news. RIP Philip Seymour Hoffman. One of the greatest actors of a generation and a sweet, funny & humble man."
American singer and actress Lindsay Pearce posted: "Too many souls keep being lost to substance abuse. Thoughts to Philip Seymour Hoffman's loved ones and all affected by his loss. So sad."

Justin Timberlake tweeted saying: "Just hearing about Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Devastating. What an amazingly gifted actor. RIP".

British actor Sam Claflin, who starred alongside the actor in the latest Hunger Games film Catching Fire said: "PSH - I am genuinely shocked, saddened and speechless. A truly wonderful man, with a magical touch. My hero. Thoughts are with his family."
Movie star Val Kilmer said: "Blu day, Philip Seymour Hoffman od'd. Addiction comes fr trying to escape th pain of living. We all struggle with this but Drugs never help."

Thor actor Tom Hiddleston tweeted: "Philip Seymour Hoffman. This is so unbearably sad."

Actor Dane DeHaan said: "Philip Seymour Hoffman was such a great gift to the world. I am silenced to tears."

US actress and model Andie MacDowell said: "Phillip Seymour Hoffman was not only a genius actor but a kind, generous man RIP"
