Makamba is one of Tanzania‘s rising stars in government. He is currently the Deputy Minister of Communication, Science and Technology and is rumored to run for President in 2015. Makamba is a Member of Parliament for Bumbuli constituency in the National Assembly of Tanzania. Before running for the Bumbuli parliamentary seat, Makamba was aide to Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete for 5 years. Named Young Global Leader class of 2012 by the World Economic Forum, Makamba comes from a political family; his father, Yusuf Makamba was Secretary General of the ruling CCM party under Julius Nyerere.

Mohammed Dewji, Tanzania, Group Chief Executive Officer of Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited
Dewji is the Group Chief Executive Officer of Mohammed Enterprises Tanzania Limited (MeTL) and at 39 is the youngest member of the Forbes’ Africa’s 50 Richest list with an estimated networth of USD $500 million. The MeTL Group began as a family business, a small trading company which Mohammed transformed into one of the largest industrial conglomerates in East Africa, with interests ranging from real estate, agriculture, finance, distribution and manufacturing. The company employs more than 24,000 people across Tanzania and according to Dewji, generates annual revenues of USD$1.3 billion. Dewji has been a Member of Parliament in the National Assembly of Tanzania since 2005. Dewji graduated from Georgetown University with a degree in International Business and Finance with a minor in Theology.

Kola Karim, Nigeria, Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Shoreline Energy International
Karim is the Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Shoreline Energy International, a Nigerian conglomerate with interests that span oil & gas, power generation, engineering, commodities trading, infrastructure and construction across sub-Saharan Africa. In 2012, Shoreline Energy partnered with U.K-based Heritage Oil in acquiring a stake in OML 30, an oilfield asset in Nigeria for a reported $850 million. Ba is also a co-founder and Chairman of AllAfrica Global Media, Inc – owner and operator of AllAfrica.com, one of the largest distributor of African news and information worldwide. For three years in a row, Mahtar Ba has been selected as one of the 100 Most Influential Africans by the New African Magazine, in 2011, 2012 and 2013 respectively. Ben Magara, Zimbabwe, Chief Executive Officer and Director of Lonmin
Recently appointed as the Chief Executive Officer and as a Director of Lonmin, the world’s third-largest platinum mining company, Magara is tasked with improving industrial relations and guiding the platinum miner’s turnaround strategy after strikes last year triggered violence which killed 46 people including 34 strikers shot dead by police in a single day at its Marikana mine. With a mining career that spans 26 years, Magara was previously the Chief Executive Officer of Anglo Coal South Africa responsible for Anglo American total coal business in South Africa and revenues of around USD $2 billion. Magara, who speaks seven languages, has a degree in Mining Engineering from the University of Zimbabwe.

The highly-respected presenter of “Focus on Africa”, BBC’s flagship and first-ever dedicated daily TV news show on BBC World News died of cardiac arrest on January 18 earlier this year at his home in London. Dumor, who was named one of “100 Most Influential Africans” in 2013 by New African magazine, had “established himself as one of the emerging African faces of global broadcasting.”As a lead presenter for BBC World, Dumor had considerable influence on how the continent is covered.

A woman runs for her life as a wall of hot ash engulfs the villages behind her after a deadly volcanic eruption in Indonesia.

Three children and a teacher are reported to be among 14 people killed after the eruption on Mount Sinabung on the island of Sumatra.
Officials fear more loss of life with rescuers unable to reach those stranded in the path of the hot ash and rocks.

Dramatic gun battle erupts in Bangkok in clashes ahead of election

A gunman takes cover as a shootout breaks out amid anti-government clashes in the Thai capital of Bangkok as the nation prepares to go to the polls.

At least seven people, including an American photojournalist, have been reported wounded with one man reportedly shot in the neck.

Nigerian with 107 Citi Bank cards arrested at Lagos airport

A 36-year old Nigerian, with two different international passports, has been arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos, western Nigeria, with 107 Citi Bank credit cards, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA said in a statement on Saturday.
NDLEA said it arrested Funsho Oladimeji Babatunde with the automated teller machine cards concealed inside a luggage during the outward screening of Turkish Airline passengers to Istanbul, Turkey.

The agency airport commander, Hamza Umar, said that the suspect had two international passports bearing his photographs but with different names.
“He had a Nigerian passport with the name Funsho Oladimeji Babatunde and a Turkish passport with the name Kosar Kursat both bearing his photographs,” Umar said.

He said the cards found in his luggage are 68 Citi Interswitch Master cards and 39 Citi Interswitch Visa cards.

The suspect who is a native of Iwo town in Kwara State lives in Surulere Lagos.
The Ordinary National Diploma (OND) graduate at the Kwara Polytechnic was quoted as telling NDLEA officials that he was taking the cards to a friend in Turkey.
“My friend in Turkey called me that I should help in sending the cards to him in Istanbul, Turkey. When I collected the cards in Lagos, I kept them in my bag but during search, the officer saw the cards and took me for interrogation. I am an OND graduate of Economics at the Kwara Polytechnic,” he was quoted as saying.

NDLEA Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, has directed that the suspect be transferred to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for further investigation, said Mitchell Ofoyeju, NDLEA spokesperson.

“Preliminary investigation suggests that the suspect had unlawful possession of 107 credit cards. The financial instruments are believed to be used for fraudulent purposes since he is not an authorised agent,” Ofoyeju quoted Giade as saying.

UK weather: snow and flooding

Wintry conditions have brought a mixture of snow and flooding to different parts of the country.

Snow has been falling across high ground throughout the UK, particularly across Wales, Scotland and northern England, with further hail storms and thunder predicted.

Temperatures will drop to around freezing tonight. The Met Office has warned of icy stretches on roads and the potential for travel disruption.

Meanwhile the Environment Agency has issued more than 140 flood alerts and 10 more serious flood warnings in the south-west, which mean flooding is expected and immediate action is required.

Escalator strangles trapped woman

A woman was strangled after being trapped by her scarf and hair in an escalator in Montreal
A woman was strangled after her scarf and then her hair became caught in the mechanism of a Montreal tube station escalator as it rolled towards the platform during the morning rush hour.
Bob Lamle of Montreal's ambulance service said people who saw the incident made frantic efforts to free her but were unable to halt the tragedy. He said he had never seen anything like it in his 30-year career.

Emergency crews found the 48-year-old woman lying on her back trapped at the bottom of the escalator. A doctor declared her dead at the scene.

The accident happened at around 9.15am local time. Montreal police spokesman Jean-Pierre Brabant said the woman tried to pull on the scarf to release it and her hair also got stuck.
